Day surgery

Day surgery is as the name says: it describes a range of surgical procedures which are performed within a 24 hour period. The patient is able to return home on the same day. Many of these procedures are carried out under a local or regional anaesthetic although a general anaesthetic may be used in certain cases.

We offer various forms of day surgery at Harley Street which include a ‘one-stop’ consultation and surgery service which is performed on the same day. The usual convention is to set a date for the initial consultation followed by another appointment for surgery. But this service provides both of these in a single day.

Treatment is provided by a multi-disciplinary team of surgeons, anaesthetists, radiologists, nurses and other related staff.

Types of day surgery

These include:

  • Treatment of various skin conditions such as the removal of moles, warts and sebaceous cysts.
  • Vasectomy
  • Removal of ingrowing toenails
  • Stitching of wounds or other injuries
  • Dental procedures, e.g. wisdom teeth removal
  • Podiatry, e.g. removal of corns
  • Breast procedures, e.g. nipple biopsy
  • Drainage of cysts and abscesses
  • Colo-rectal procedures, e.g. removal of polyps
  • Varicose veins
  • Cataracts
  • Knee arthroscopy
  • Termination of pregnancy
  • Hernia repair

The day surgery process

You attend the clinic or hospital for a consultation and discussion of the treatment. This also includes questions about your medical history.

Any diagnostic tests will be carried out where necessary. If your condition can be treated on the day you will be asked to sign a consent form, followed by preparation for surgery.

Once you have undergone your procedure you will be provided with information about recovery following surgery and a follow up appointment.
